Children Learn About Importance of Charity

July 5th, 2011

30 Jun 2011

The importance of local charities was highlighted to pupils during a visit by a member of the Shuttlewood Clarke Foundation.

The pupils from M4 were learning about the role of the charity as part of their PSHE (Personal, Social, Health Education) studies.

Kathleen Wass, from the Foundation, talked about the charity’s efforts to help local disabled people and those who are socially isolated.

The children learned about Ulverscroft Grange, a community support centre with tea rooms and a charity shop, where disabled people can go to socialise and take part in activities such as craft days and wellbeing walks. The Foundation also has its own sensory garden and information hub.

Teacher Mrs Fiona Millington-Pipe said: “As a class, we have been looking at disability and decided to focus on a small local charity to find out what they do. The children got an awful lot from Mrs Wass’s visit.”

The class has been invited to visit the charity’s grounds and tea rooms in September.

Oval’s East Midlands business makes commitment to local community

September 27th, 2010

Staff at the Leicester and Nottingham offices of Oval Insurance Broking have launched a new initiative to help people in their community while having fun and raising team morale.

Team leaders at the largest regional office of corporate insurance broker Oval have launched a Sports and Social Club, putting on events with an emphasis on raising money for Leicestershire charity the Shuttlewood Clarke Foundation, which provides support, care and friendship to elderly people, as well as running projects with adults with disabilities and young people.

Events that have already taken place include dress down days and cake sales, and future events are set to include treasure hunts, quizzes, and even a proposed sky dive.

Alan Norman, CEO of the Shuttlewood Clark Foundation, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, recently visited staff at Oval’s Leicester and Nottingham offices to present information about the charity and the projects their activities will support.

The Shuttlewood Clarke Foundation’s work with elderly people includes organising activities and events for the socially isolated and providing free wheelchairs and mobility aids. Their work with young people includes the Yew Trail outdoor classroom at Ulverscroft in Leicestershire, which provides an environment where children of all ages, abilities and diverse ethnic and social backgrounds can explore, enjoy and experience the natural world through practical involvement.

Larissa Murphy, Team Leader at Oval Insurance Broking said “We wanted to launch a Sports and Social club to give staff fun activities to take part in outside work and decided that it would be a good idea to have a charitable focus for the club. We were aware of the work of the Shuttlewood Clarke Foundation as they had been an Oval Leicester client for some years, and we were keen to do something to support them in their 20th anniversary year, and we’ve had a great time getting involved.”

Alan Norman, CEO of the Shuttlewood Clarke Foundation said “We’re delighted that Oval has decided to support the work of the Shuttlewood Clarke Foundation. The money raised by staff at their Leicester and Nottingham offices will be used to support our projects with elderly people, disabled adults and young people in the local area.”

The Leicester office is Oval’s largest regional Insurance Broking office employing in excess of 70 people. Combined with Nottingham, the wider East Midlands business employs in excess of 85 people.

A SPECIAL WATERCOLOUR WORKSHOP IN A VERY SPECIAL PLACE

May 26th, 2010

The Yew Trail Yurt

If you have never painted in a YURT before now is the time to try it! I was recently invited to visit and look round Ulverscroft Manor near Markfield in Leicestershire where the Shuttlewood Clarke Foundation is located.

This is a charitable organisation devoted to providing support, care and friendship to the people of Leicestershire. I was taken round the place in a golf buggy and visited their various buildings including the now-famous yurt. OK OK I’ll tell you! A yurt is a tent/marquee-like structure built of pre-fabricated steam-bent wooden poles and covered with a waterproof fabric. The whole thing is topped with large acrylic circular window and the spacious interior is very well lit. A wood-burning stove completes the facilities. It is based on a Central Asia Nomadic Tent and I just fell in love with it and the organisers agreed I could run a one-day workshop in it.

We can take only 20 people/artists/would-be artists so please book early if you would like to join me. So the day of this amazing experience is going to be Friday August 6th from 10am till 4pm. The cost will be £60.00 a head. All profits from the day will go towards the work of the Shuttlewood Clarke Foundation, registered charity number 803525.

Your £60.00 will entitle you to coffee on arrival, excellent 2 course lunch with a glass of wine and tea or coffee with cake on departure. All materials will be provided for those of you without any. And of course, the teaching!

On these workshops I treat everybody as if they are beginners and devote the large part of the morning session to techniques. You will learn how to use the five basic methods of applying watercolour paint and after lunch we will move out into the grounds for you to start a landscape painting. You do not need any experience in watercolour painting to enrol and I love working with absolute beginners. We all learn a lot from each other. What magnificent grounds they are by the way…all 55 acres of them!

Have a look at the websites: www.shuttlewood-clarke.org and www.yewtrial.org.uk

Then let me or Linda Prime, Operations Director at the Shuttlewood Clarke Foundation (linda@shuttlewood-clarke.org), know if you are interested in joining us. We will give you more information about getting there and so on. I promise you an exciting and memorable day.

I look forward to hearing from you

Best wishes
