SHUTTLEWOOD CLARKE FOUNDATION GREAT CHRISTMAS TREE COMPETITION

The Shuttlewood Clarke Foundation, Leicestershire’s unique registered charity which offers support, care and friendship to the elderly, adults of all ages with disabilities and young people, recently held its Great Christmas Tree Competition.

Three schools took part – Glen Hills Primary School in Glen Parva, Lady Jane Grey Primary School in Groby and Warren Hills Primary School in Coalville.

The wonderful trees that each class created were displayed in one of the Foundation’s country houses, Ulverscroft Manor, where over 300 housebound and socially isolated people had the opportunity to view them during the Christmas period.

Alan Norman, Chief Executive for the Shuttlewood Clarke Foundation said “We are delighted with the fantastic, creative trees the school children have made. They make a magnificent festive display which really enhances our Christmas decorations.”

The competition was judged by County Councillor David Snartt and Caroline Joyce, Operation’s Director for the Loughborough Building Society at the Foundation’s Christmas Fair on Monday 21st December 2009. The winning tree was created by pupils at Warren Hills Primary School and the children from the successful class won a day out at the Foundation’s Yew Trail Outdoor Classroom and Creative Space.
As a thankyou to all of the schools who took part; each class that entered received a voucher entitling them to discount off their next visit to the Yew Trail.

Thankyou for your support.

The Yew Trail is a secluded, safe area of private woodland that provides an inspirational, magical environment for children of all ages, abilities and diverse ethnic and social backgrounds.

One of the best places for wildlife in Leicestershire and Rutland

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

Bluebells, Yew Trail, Ulverscroft Wood
As a local Wildlife Site, Ulverscroft Wood, home of the Yew Trail outdoor classroom and creative space, has been recognised as one of the best places for wildlife in Leicestershire and Rutland.

The Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust report states;
Ulverscroft Wood is ancient woodland, meaning that the site has been wooded since at least 1600AD. The original woodland would have developed in conditions very different from today’s, and despite the obvious human management, it is the nearest we have to our original natural ‘wildwood’, and as such it is an irreplaceable part of our natural heritage.
The wood’s long history allows it to support species such as Bluebell, Yellow Pimpernel and Wood-sorrel.
Ancient woodlands are of special value as they provide a range of habitats that support a rich diversity of plants, fungi and animals.

Yew Trail offers a world of discovery and the opportunity to inspire the young people of today.
If you wish to discuss the site, facilities or any aspect of your visit to the Yew Trail, please contact the Foundation on 01530 244914 or via yewtrail@shuttlewood-clarke.org

3M Healthcare; Putting in the spadework

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

A team of volunteers from the research and development department of 3M at Loughborough left their laboratories and offices for the day to wield spades and sledgehammers to help with the Yew Trail.

They were erecting a new fence to extend the trail’s classroom area ready for the start of the new school term in September.

Some 26 volunteers from 3M lent their muscle-power to the cause and between them put up a 550m stretch of wooden posts and wire-mesh fencing to keep cattle from straying into the extended area.

The project was organised as part of the diversified technology company’s 3M 4Good programme, which gives every employee the chance to do a day’s community work on company time.

Alan Norman, chief executive of the Shuttlewood Clarke Foundation, said: “They all worked exceptionally hard and we greatly appreciate everything they’ve done,”

The volunteer project was organised by Jim Lister, group leader with 3M Drug Delivery Systems. “It was certainly quite a change from our normal working day in research and development,” Jim commented. “Everyone enjoyed it and it was very rewarding to feel we had achieved so much between us.”
